Feasibility studies

Are you about to embark on fundraising, but concerned that your ambitions may not be achievable? We can explore and test your concerns either through a development study or through feasibility testing.

Our approach to feasibility testing is based on both quantitative and qualitative measures. We undertake research, both desk-based and in the field. Who might be expected to give and to what? Who carries influence and therefore should be recruited as a fundraising leader?

Qualitative

We use our experience to interpret the basic principles and set them in your context. Every client is different and, while a tested framework is used, the approach is not formulaic. We will:

  • Help you assess the strength of the case. Is it persuasive and attractive? Is there evidence that it captures the imagination of potential donors? Are the costs justifiable? Are they accurate? Do they represent good value for money?
  • Analyse what might be the motivations of different groups, institutions and individuals in supporting your fundraising. In particular, how will the organisation’s closest supporters become engaged? What role might donor recognition play?

Quantitative

Quantitative measures involve statistical analysis of past and potential future support as well as structured interviews with key people, designed to elicit information about their own and others’ relationships with your organisation, about their capacity for support and their motivation. A scoring system is used to quantify these findings. While interviews are structured, sufficient flexibility is allowed for additional comments and concerns to emerge. These can be valuable in providing the backdrop to the potential fundraising and form a part of the qualitative assessment.

Reporting back

Depending on what is agreed at the outset, we can provide:

  • A report
  • A draft case for support
  • A detailed strategic and operational plan and timetable
  • A risk management plan
  • Proposed fundraising leadership lists
  • Lists of potential major donors, including trusts, individuals and companies
  • Advice on tax-effective giving and other methods of raising the sights of donors
  • An operational budget
  • Assessment of human resource implications which take into account existing staff and sets out options for fundraising direction and administration
